The United States is one of the most popular destinations for international travelers, but a new study has revealed that Americans are still optimistic about their travel options in 2022.
The “Americans Continue to Be Optimistic for Travel in 2022” is a good sign that the world is looking up. Americans are optimistic about traveling overseas in 2022.
MMGY Travel Intelligence released the top results from its “Winter Edition” poll of 2021 Portrait of American Travelers.
Despite a short-term decline in the sense of safety from a December 6 MMGY Global poll, U.S. travelers have maintained their positive attitude on travel, according to the study, which was performed in October and contained data from 4,500 respondents.
“As 2022 approaches and passengers begin to embrace a new year of possibilities,” Chris Davidson, executive vice president of MMGY Fly Intelligence, said, “it seems that the Delta variation has had just a minimal influence on the inclination to travel.” “We think we are passed severe virus-related travel hurdles, however Omicron’s appearance will have a little short-term impact.” Holiday travel is already returned to pre-pandemic levels, and we anticipate Americans to take to the roads and planes in the new year with renewed vigor and optimism.”
What’s Hot Right Now
According to the Portrait of American Travelers study, 87 percent of Boomers are immunized, the highest proportion of any generation. Boomers also anticipate to spend at least $4,000 on travel in the next 12 months, which puts them ahead of all other generations. This is the most money recorded all year, and it outnumbers any other generation.
Over the previous three quarters, the number of Boomers planning to travel has increased. Travel is especially popular among boomers who earn more than $150,000.
In 2022, millennials are expected to take the most trips, surpassing all other generations. During the following 12 months, they expect to take an average of 4.4 travels. In the next 12 months, Gen-Z wants to travel 4.1 times, Boomers 3.8 times, and Gen-X just 3.3 times.
Those who have been vaccinated seem to be more concerned about catching and transmitting COVID-19. It doesn’t appear to stop them from traveling, however. In fact, vaccinated tourists are more likely to stay in a hotel and fly in the following six months than non-vaccinated passengers.
Three particular themes were also covered in the “Winter Edition” report: online travel agents (OTAs), loyalty programs, and cruises.
Seventy-three percent of leisure travelers use an OTA website or app to research or book travel on a regular basis. They’re used for the same purpose by all generations: to compare pricing and availability.
At least one hotel reward program is used by 52 percent of active leisure travelers, and 48 percent have joined at least one airline loyalty program. Gen-Z is the least likely to be a member, while Boomers are the most likely.
When it comes to cruises, half of leisure travelers said they were at least somewhat interested in doing one in the next year. The Caribbean is the most popular cruise route (81 percent), followed by the Mediterranean at 71 percent, with millennials showing the greatest enthusiasm (69 percent).
Overall, the Winter Edition of the 2021 Portrait of American Travelers reveals that the leisure travel industry is quite optimistic.
