I recently visited a United Club and was so impressed by the service that I found myself wondering if it is possible to be overly impressed with airline clubs.

Without a doubt, Delta Air Lines’ base-level airport clubs are better than United and American Airlines’. The newest clubs are more tastefully constructed, and the food selections are more varied and better. Delta, unlike United, does not have separate business class lounges (which are now set to reopen), nor does it provide first-class cuisine as American does (and those are re-opening as well).
There are many issues that flyers have with United Clubs. Showers are no longer available. They’re suffocating. After theirs was taken away to construct that specialized business class lounge, poor Newark travelers have been waiting a long time for a functioning club experience.
But when I went inside one in Houston for a quick visit, I was surprised to see… food. Although it mainly packaged food, there were sandwiches and snacks available, as well as a ramen bar (admittedly with packaged heat-and-serve ramen to add the fixings to).
I guess my expectations are so low since I’m used to American Airlines’ lounges. United is putting greater emphasis on premium cabin cuisine in the air as well as premium cabin food in airport lounges. American’s most recent invention is a “create your own mezza” station, which, in my view, is a significant step down from previous offers, particularly when I see it not being maintained and becoming cluttered.
I’ve chastised American Airlines for talking about’monitoring the competition,’ since they should be concentrating on providing value to consumers, not doing what everyone else does. They aren’t even doing what everyone else is doing here.
A packed sandwich option, like as United’s, is not only more substantial, but also more convenient. Between flights, there isn’t much time, and there are big lineups at airport vendors? Sure, you can order food from an airport restaurant using the Grab app before you deplane and pick it up on your way to your next gate at select airports. You may also walk inside the club and have a sandwich to eat when you board.
It proved to be a lifesaver on our trip. I figured I’d have plenty of time in Houston to catch my flight. I needed to change terminals and boarded the inter-terminal train, which broke down while I was on board, wasting the time I had planned to have a quick snack.
I was still able to consume some food. Although it wasn’t gourmet, it was much appreciated. Thank you, United Airlines!
