Royal Caribbean Cruise Line is taking a proactive approach to the COVID-19 outbreak, saying that it does not want its guests “to worry about their health.” The cruise line has created an onboard monitoring system and will be conducting mandatory daily checkups for all staff members who have been in contact with passengers during the ongoing outbreak.

During a seven-day, round-trip Eastern Caribbean cruise that left Miami on December 11 and arrived yesterday, 44 passengers on board Royal Caribbean’s Symphony of the Seas tested positive for COVID.
The remaining passengers and staff members were recommended to contact a licensed testing facility within three to five days after disembarking on Saturday, equating to.72 percent of the ship’s entire population of 6,074 passengers and crew members.

Passengers on the December 11-18 journey, as well as those on two subsequent Symphony of the Seas itineraries, were also alerted that a guest who had traveled on one of the ship’s previous departures had tested positive for the Omicron strain.
“The CDC informed us that a passenger aboard our (December) 4th cruise had tested positive for Omicron,” Royal Caribbean spokesman Lyan Sierra-Caro told USA Today late Saturday. “They (CDC) requested that we tell passengers on the previous cruise, as well as the present one.”
Before being permitted to join the December 11 cruise, all guests aged 12 and above had been completely vaccinated and tested COVID-negative, as per Royal Caribbean’s current guidelines. Prior to embarkation, children under the age of 12 who are still ineligible for the vaccination had to test negative.
In an email, the cruise company notified guests on the three most recent sailings of the Symphony of the Seas of its findings and explained what had really happened.
According to a copy of the email acquired by USA Today, Royal Caribbean said, “This passenger did not disclose symptoms to our onboard medical experts as specified in our health guidelines.” “Their post-cruise test findings proved that they had the Omicron variety.”
The 44 positive cases detected on the December 11th trip were “unrelated to the Omicron case from the guest who traveled on December 4th,” according to the cruise line’s email.
“They were discovered as a consequence of rapidly identifying close connections after a visitor tested positive,” Sierra-Caro said, adding that once their COVID-19 status was discovered, each of the people was instantly quarantined. “Everyone who tested positive was asymptomatic, and their health was closely monitored.” Earlier in the voyage, six passengers were disembarked and taken home. These changes, according to Sierra-Caro, have had no influence on any planned Symphony of the Seas itineraries.
