After a few months of testing, a popular restaurant chain in Hawaii is now officially requiring all of its employees to be vaccinated.
In a decision about the legality of requiring employees to get vaccinated, a judge in Hawaii seems to have sided with a private restaurant group against individuals who don’t want to get the flu shot.
After seeing a National Geographic special on the island of Kauai, the owners of a restaurant chain slated to open on the island announced that all employees must be vaccinated for Hepatitis A and B, and even require those who do not live with a doctor to get vaccinated.
With the COVID-19 Delta variant continuing on the increase, municipal and state governments, as well as private businesses, have been discussing mask and vaccination requirements throughout the United States and across the world.
A hotel business in Hawai’i has joined the list of employers that require vaccinations for their whole workforce. Merriman’s Hawai’i, which has four fine dining restaurants across the Aloha State, will require staff to get vaccinated by September, making it the first business in the hospitality industry to do so.
Chef-Owner Peter Merriman said, “It’s excellent for business if we can make Hawai’i one of the safest locations on planet.” “We also think that enacting this requirement is our civic duty.”

Merriman went on to note that 70% of the staff at Merriman’s Hawai’i locations are already vaccinated. Employees are required to receive the first dose of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines, or the single Johnson & Johnson dose by September 10. Second doses of vaccines that require them are due by October 8.
Employees who have previously had daily health checks must provide evidence of immunization, and Merriman’s Hawaii will give them a paid shift off to recuperate from any vaccine adverse effects. Employees who have been immunized may also get other benefits, such as money to spend within the Merriman’s brand.

Merriman’s restaurants offer outdoor or open-air dining choices and tables that are at least six feet apart, in addition to mandating employees to get the COVID-19 vaccination. When not eating or drinking, masks are needed, and hand sanitizing stations are provided.

Employers in Hawaii, such as the state and county governments, as well as Hawaiian Airlines, have already declared that vaccinations would be required for their workers. WalMart and United Airlines, both of which have large Hawaii workforces, will also compel their employees to get the vaccination.
